Fans of the South Korean boyband, BTS can bring facsimiles of the seven members into their homes with a new line from the American toy-maker, Mattel. This remarkable collaboration was announced in January 2019, launching #BTSdollsofficial. It is one of the more prominent collaborations between a Western giant and a Korean pop band.

Merchandising collaborations are widespread in the K-pop industry. Not only is their music popular, but their partnership with various brands are also fan-favorite. Some of these include Nike x G-Dragon launch of Nike Air Force 1 ‘Para-Noise,’ BTS x Puma launch of Basket Patent Sneakers, and Turin Sneakers. Even Korean fashion brands like ADER Error, Casestudy have collaborated with international brands like Puma and Vans, respectively.
K-pop-associated merchandise in the US is even more popular because of the various accolades that have been won by K-pop bands. BTS landed on the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. BLACKPINK also made its mark on Billboard’s charts.
After the BTS toy line collaboration, Janet Hsu, Mattel’s chief franchise management officer and head of the company’s Global Franchise Management division, commented, “BTS is a pop-culture phenomenon that is leading the K-pop movement with a fan following that transcends age, culture, and language.” The global interest in this collection has surpassed the company’s expectations.
