Samyang Foods, the company behind the immensely popular “Buldak Stir-fried Noodles,” is expanding its health food business through the plant-based brand Jack & Pulse. To that effect, the company is trying to reduce its reliance on the Buldak series, which currently dominates its sales, and focus it on a new, equally successful product.

What is Jack & Pulse?

It is a brand of Samyang Foods which is essentially a nutrition brand that with inspiration. From plant based protein and more, this Korean food brand has everything you need to stay fit and healthy.

New launches

Samyang Foods, through its Jack & Pulse brand, is launching a range of new health-focused foods, convenient meals, and protein drinks made from plant-based ingredients. These products include ‘Deep Sleep Potion Ash Agarwood,’ which aids in healthy sleep, and ‘Enerblast Potion One Touch Shot,’ which boosts energy metabolism. They also have ‘Soft Hummus Bites’ in two flavors (plain and hot spicy) with a chewy outer skin and hummus filling made from ground chickpeas. ‘Crispy Plant Bites’ come in two flavors (sweet garlic and crushed pepper) and are plant-based protein coated with hemp seed and sunflower seed batter for added crunch and richness. Lastly, they’ve introduced a plant-based protein drink called ‘Protein Drop.’

The new launches are in the ‘Home Meal Replacement’ or HMR category. Unlike the conventional HMRs, it will not focus on families with two to three individuals. The Jack & Pulse brand by Smayang Foods will make HMRs in the form of snacks. You can eat them from anywhere you like and they will be perfect for solo individuals as well.

Tangle – Another Samyang Foods Brand

To diversify into another healthy segment, Tangle is for the Western markets. It is a dry noodle brand with lower salt content and higher protein content.

Samyang Foods – A new direction

Samyang Foods’ owner, Jeon Byung-woo, a third-generation executive, has led the company’s healthy snack program since last year. After graduating from Columbia University’s Philosophy Department in 1994, Jeon joined Samyang Food’s Overseas Strategy Division in 2019 and has been taking management classes. Since September 2022, he’s served as the general manager of strategy at Samyang Round Square and the head of Samyang Food’s new business division.

Samyang Foods’ sales rose 57.1% year-on-year to KRW 385.7 billion in Q1 due to the Buldak series’ global popularity. Operating profit surged 235.7% to 80.1 billion won. Despite high growth and double-digit operating profit margins, there’s a growing need for investment in new businesses to create another hit product.
